‘Terry G’ writes: “I believe the tyranny issue is in response to a majority population forcing it's will on a minority.”
Isn’t that how democracy works? What makes this unacceptable now?
Here’s a look at the insanity in our midst. The comments below were in reaction to an article in ‘The Atlantic’ entitled “Some Uncomfortable Numbers About Guns in America”. More and more I find that the comments at the end of ANY news article about political topics is more telling about where are society’s mindset is than the news piece itself. Words and phrases like, tyranny, loss of freedom, militias, dictator, Nazi are spewed without impunity.
What is fascinating to me (besides the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any consequence for those who so callously use these terms in reference to our government and this President) is the “underlying” “meaning” or “reasoning” that these things are a possibility in this time in our history when NEVER BEFORE, even when certain rights and freedoms were ACTUALLY being infringed upon in the immediate years following September 1, 2001, in my long life, have such treasonous discussions been broached so publicly. Any such conversations would have been viewed as un-American prior to the election of THIS President!! Why then, is it now acceptable discourse about our country?
High-capacity magazines aren't about "putting down a deer"...they're about defending a free society from a tyrannical government and its forces. Something, I'm afraid, that seems to be foreign to you. It's not about "shooting some perp"...it's about waging war against a dictator.
Weapons are the only defense the people have against governmental tyranny. Were the founding father's wackos or nut jobs for foreseeing the need of the people to protect their own rights? Gov't of the People by the People. Unfortunately, more leaders are confident that they have the mandate to tell American's how to live every aspect of their lives. This is not freedom. People need to have the same type of weapons and might be used against them. It the unsung fourth power in the balance of powers.
I agree with your assessment about citizens who own guns, and having had prior military experience being effective deterrents to not just our own; but foreign governments. Although a Christian myself; the founders were not Christians, save for John Jay.
Most were the precursor to agnostics/atheists in that they believed if God existed, he was not personal or knowable. They merely used God to justify rebellion against the Crown they felt was tyrannical.
Lastly, as a service member, trained to fight by our military; I can tell you that a bunch of prior guys from the marines/army leading and training private citizens in an post apocalyptic type scenario in guerrilla warfare could very well turn the tide; and the Feds know it. Look how long it took a concerted effort by our military to "peacefully" take down countries in the Middle East with superior tech, training, and communications. These jack asses ARE NOT going to bomb their own country; unless they know they are losing. Also, they will be fighting deserters and traitors in their midst or our brethren in ranks who will refuse to fight their own country men.
They will be busy trying to prevent these noble allies of the people from reaching us in the resistance if this sort of thing does go down. Also, if they declare Marshall Law; who will be maintaining and paying the taxes for said Abrams tanks? We don't have the money to pay EBT cards for the next ten years; Abrams will stay nice and shiny where they are thank you very much. Even if not, or they do stay immobile; it will still be the bloodiest war of all time. That is why they are starting to practice for us. Google their Army training exercise in going after make believe, white, tea partiers who supposedly would decide to take over a small town in North Carolina. Its BS to the max. Most of these people, tea partiers included have been exceptionally adept at peaceful means of protest; but the Federal Governments actions to label them homegrown terrorists of sorts is cause for alarm.
However, that is how government continues to grow its unconstitutional reach; make a doomsday scenario; train for it; then find a bunch of suckers to scare everyone with; then enact Marshall Law.
Guys like me who have no desire to harm my fellow Americans will be rounded up first as we have been trained ( I would find my brothers in arms and help resuce and set up resistance if the government went rogue like that; so would others like me and the Feds know it), this will be coupled with a determined effort to find as many guns as possible; usually the precursor to this is an concerted effort to have citizens concerned about gun control to enforce as many as they know have them conform and turn theirs in as well. 1984 anyone?
After this, you will see legislators pass draconian laws that will make you very afraid; and regret turning them in because by then the gig will be up. Although you will be powerless to stop it. Most likely, even though I am not one; those crazy Montana minute men types will become the most popular crazies around. Most likely because they will have what everyone wants; guns, self training, and doomsday supplies!
Say what you want; but when the money runs out people at all levels of society will do crazy crap to each other. Many of us will be fleeing to the country to hope for a nice country white boy to take us in; train us, and hopefully feed and shelter us. Hell, I'd shuck corn till the cows came home, and you know you would join me.
I believe the tyranny issue is in response to a majority population forcing it's will on a minority. The minority can much more easily be controlled and subjugated if they are disarmed and marginalized. The threat of violence must be perceived as real and substantial to be effective. As to self defense, there are not enough police per capita in our country to provide a serious and robust response mechanic. We are pretty helpless if outnumbered and unarmed waiting for the police. Women are raped, gay's are bashed, people are robbed and murdered daily. But words will only make me feel bad for a while.
Yeah.. Tell that to the millions of people that have been systematically exterminated by their governments after they disarmed them. Lets not forget that after the UK and Australia to name a few banned all firearms.. Violent crime has sky rocketed.
In the UK you are now 6 times more lilkely to be mugged in London than NYC. 51% off all home invasions in the UK happen when the homeowner is home vs 13% here. The UK is the second worst for crime in Europe compared to the lowest crime, the Swiss, that have not only very liberal gun laws, but most citizens have govt issued fully automatic military machine guns in the home as part of their defense.
Guns are not the problem... a lax and morally compromised society here in the US that is more interested in giving criminals more rights, let their kids run amock with no moral virutue because their parents lack it as well. In every state that has passed concealed carry over the last 20 years has seen a decrease in violent crime.
You want to see who is to blame for the state of this country, look in the mirror.
Crime aside, the constitution, bill of rights and the federalist papers are clear on this issue, citizens here are responsible for the oversight of their government and are constitutionally protected to bear arms to ensure this country stays free of tyranny
