U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump shared a racist meme on Twitter on Sunday. Despite backlash, Trump left the tweet up for his millions of followers to see.
Last night on Twitter, Donald Trump shared a racist meme with fake crime statistics on African Americans. Early fact-checkers are stating that it appears the meme was originated by Neo-Nazis and was first shared by a sympathizer of Hitler the day before Trump shared it. In spite of being called out on it, however, Trump left the meme for his millions of followers to enjoy and simply kept on tweeting. Lies like this are literally getting African Americans killed.
After Trump opted to leave the tweet up, my next thought was that surely another presidential candidate would call him out for what he did. Beyond being factually inaccurate, the tweet is grossly offensive and breeds very real hate among whites who are prone to believe such a lie — that 81% of whites are killed by blacks, when the truth is that 84% of whites are actually killed by whites, according to the FBI.
I don’t know why I expected Trump to delete the tweet or apologize for it, but the idea of him simply leaving it up to spread across the Internet is breathtaking. He’s leading most polls for the Republican presidential nomination and has influence right now. It’s just shocking as hell to see someone in his position so flagrantly, unapologetically racist.
